After taking the train from Florence we arrived in Rome and grabbed a taxi to Le Meridien Visconti Rome located close to the Vatican. The hotel was wonderfully located near to the Vatican and an easy walk to the Tiber and into many of the main sights of Rome and a wonderful bottle of Prosecco was waiting as our Titanium Welcome Gift. On our first night we went out for a walk around the city and to the Vatican to get some great nighttime views and pictures.
The next day we were up early for our early entry tour of the Colosseum, which was well worth going to first thing to avoid the crowds. The tour was an amazing exploration of the Colosseum, and after we did the short walk to the Roman Forum which was a little busier by 10 am but doing a self guided tour we were able to see a great deal at our own pace. We walked around much of the city stopping at the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain before heading back to the hotel for a break before heading up to a great dinner at a neighboring hotel's rooftop.
The next morning we were once again up early to do the early access tour at the Vatican. Again, it was well worth going for this first tour (not the open up the facility with the key tour, but rather the first scheduled early tour). With the crowds light it was easy to see many of the wonders inside the Vatican and when the tour itself was over it was possible to move through the Vatican Museums before the crowds became unbearable.
I had some great runs early each morning at sunrise which if you can manage it is a great idea as the streets are empty and the light is beautiful as the sun comes up. I am a big fan of Le Meridien in Europe as the rooms are often larger than at other hotels, and often, as was the case here, rooms are modern and functional and tips for the area and some discounts on coffee and some museums are often included in their welcome packets. The gym was small but functional and the breakfast was very good as were drinks in the relaxing bar space. The location was central enough without being too noisy. It was necessary to take a taxi to get to the train station but that was easy so long as not during rush hour. If you are doing the Vatican and Colosseum do the early tours- well worth getting up early to make the most of your days. A great property and price.
