SpringHill Suites Medford

      After leaving Petaluma we stopped to look at Sonoma and to find some food at something that was open- a bakery- thank goodness as food was getting harder and harder to find.  As we were sitting on a bench in Sonoma I received the call that the TownePlace Suites in Medford we had stayed at on the way down to California and were booked at for that night was closing immediately due to COVID.  They said they could accommodate us across the parking lot at the SpringHill Suites and they would make exceptions for pets.  

     We drove on to Medford in particularly heavy traffic, lots of Canadian campers and license plates as Canadians had been told to return home before the border was to be closed and a two week quarantine to be imposed for returning citizens.  Arriving at the hotel, we found it full, mostly Canadians all part of the mass exodus.  The hotel was similar to the TownePlace Suites just with a smaller kitchen set up.  The indoor pool and gym were closed, as was the restaurant, though we were told in the morning we could pick a few items from a list and our wish list would be brown bagged for us.  

     We grabbed coffee and juice the next morning before driving on to Portland where we had a nice walk along the river under the cherry blossoms, unsure when we would be able to travel again,  before returning to Seattle, arriving a week earlier than originally planned having missed the opportunity to be best-man for my best-friend and to celebrate their life together.  It was definitely not the road trip that I had planned but it was still an amazing trip with some impressive properties. 


     Looking back it was a surreal experience from Palm Springs on, not knowing which properties would be open, if it would be possible to find food and gas, and even if it would be possible to drive between states.

Residence Inn Portland Downtown/RiverPlace

        After a few months of COVID-19 lock down we decided now that trips were allowed we would do a quick trip to from Seattle to the Oregon Coast and stay in Portland.  We rented a car and drove down to Ocean Shores, Long Beach and Cannon Beach before heading inland to Portland.  We were a little hesitant about Portland as the months of protests were continuing and frequently led to violent clashes at night, so we opted for the Residence Inn Portland Downtown/RiverPlace instead of one of the properties in the heart of downtown including my favorite The Nines Portland.  An additional plus was the low pet fee at the Residence Inn Portland Downtown/RiverPlace as we were only charged $25.00.        My first hotel stay since our evacuation from California in March as the COVID-19 lock downs had begun, checking in was interesting to say the least.  Due to the protests, the entire exterior of the property is boarded up.  The area was completely dead so we opted to park on the street inste

Sheraton Petaluma

      As we made our way home as COVID-19 spread we stayed one night at the Hyatt Centric in Santa Barbara arriving just as the Governor forced restaurants to close and we grabbed a last take out fish and chip meal before everything was shuttered.  The next day we had a beautiful drive along Big Sur, to Carmel by the Sea and Monterey, and were on our way to the Westin Versa Napa when we received the call that they were closing due to COVID.  We were able to make a last minute switch to the Sheraton Petaluma as fewer and fewer options were available and San Francisco was suddenly a do not visit area with a strict lock down.        We arrived to find the hotel deserted and the Club Lounge and restaurants all closed.  The friendly check in attendant allowed us to take items from the pantry and the next morning made us coffee from there as well as no other food options were available.  The hotel was a bit if a walk to the actual town itself which was a cute spot along the river and Oliver

Four Points Perth

Downtown Perth          On a trip to Australia recently I flew into Melbourne for a few days before heading off to Perth, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.   The first of my Bonvoy stops was at the Four Points in Perth.      After leaving the hotel in Melbourne I headed to the airport in an Uber, with much less traffic on a Sunday then I had experienced Friday on my way into town. The Qantas lounges in Melbourne are undergoing large updating currently and as a result the Qantas Club Lounge and the Business Lounge are both quite busy, the former even more so with more people able to access the Qantas Club as opposed to the Business Lounge.  I was excited to take the new Dreamliner 787-900 which Qantas will be flying from Melbourne to Perth and then on to London as of March 25th, but as it was still February this plane was just returning to Melbourne.  The Dreamliner is one of my favorite planes and Qantas has done a wonderful job with these Business pods.
