San Marco at Night

     In May 2019 we left Austin on our British Airways 747-400 flight to London Heathrow.  The service and food were outstanding though it was strange going back to a plane where the overhead bins were so tiny they only fit small bags or briefcases/purses.  Fortunately our carry-on luggage was stowed easily in the various closets.  After a few hours of sleep we landed in Heathrow and took in the Concorde Lounge and had a shower and a massage before carrying on to Venice.  On this flight it was the standard 3-3 with the middle seat blocked out in the BA Business or Club World cabin, with the divider set so far back, we were almost a dozen rows back and still in the Club World section making the service a little slow and the lunch snack was basic.

     Upon arriving in Venice we took a taxi to our hotel, the AC Hotel Venezia located on the edge of Venice right next to the train station.  While Marriott offers many other higher level options in Venice, we were on a budget and opted for the well priced AC Hotel which would also be good for our deparature by train a few days later.  Our firends had landed a few hours earlier, so after meeting up we headed out for a walk around the canals and to San Marco at night time grabbing dinner and drinks. 

     The next morning we had breakfast at the hotel before heading out to explore the city.  While not wanting to spend 1000 EUR to stay at the Gritti Palace, Marriott's Luxury Collection outstanding property, we did want to have lunch there.  Amazingly we ran into friends from Seattle who we did not know were in town- small world- so had a quick drink with them before having an amazing lunch right on the canal.  If money is no object, definitely stay at this property steeped in history or splurge and use points for at least a one night stay.  If that is not an option, make sure to call in advance to at least stop by for lunch and reserve a table by the canal.

     While some might find the AC Hotel to be unromantic for a city such as Venice, it was in fact amazingly functional with a great location for the train station.  It was about a twenty-five minute walk along the canals to get to San Marco and the main tourist area, but it is a beautiful and enjoyable walk.  As is expected in Europe the room was not huge, but everything was modern, clean and our little canal view was quite nice as well.  The restaurant and public spaces were also basic but modern and functional.  A great stay at an affordable price especially in Venice.

Residence Inn Portland Downtown/RiverPlace

        After a few months of COVID-19 lock down we decided now that trips were allowed we would do a quick trip to from Seattle to the Oregon Coast and stay in Portland.  We rented a car and drove down to Ocean Shores, Long Beach and Cannon Beach before heading inland to Portland.  We were a little hesitant about Portland as the months of protests were continuing and frequently led to violent clashes at night, so we opted for the Residence Inn Portland Downtown/RiverPlace instead of one of the properties in the heart of downtown including my favorite The Nines Portland.  An additional plus was the low pet fee at the Residence Inn Portland Downtown/RiverPlace as we were only charged $25.00.        My first hotel stay since our evacuation from California in March as the COVID-19 lock downs had begun, checking in was interesting to say the least.  Due to the protests, the entire exterior of the property is boarded up....

Sheraton Petaluma

      As we made our way home as COVID-19 spread we stayed one night at the Hyatt Centric in Santa Barbara arriving just as the Governor forced restaurants to close and we grabbed a last take out fish and chip meal before everything was shuttered.  The next day we had a beautiful drive along Big Sur, to Carmel by the Sea and Monterey, and were on our way to the Westin Versa Napa when we received the call that they were closing due to COVID.  We were able to make a last minute switch to the Sheraton Petaluma as fewer and fewer options were available and San Francisco was suddenly a do not visit area with a strict lock down.        We arrived to find the hotel deserted and the Club Lounge and restaurants all closed.  The friendly check in attendant allowed us to take items from the pantry and the next morning made us coffee from there as well as no other food options were available.  The hotel was a bit if a walk t...

SpringHill Suites Medford

      After leaving Petaluma we stopped to look at Sonoma and to find some food at something that was open- a bakery- thank goodness as food was getting harder and harder to find.  As we were sitting on a bench in Sonoma I received the call that the TownePlace Suites in Medford we had stayed at on the way down to California and were booked at for that night was closing immediately due to COVID.  They said they could accommodate us across the parking lot at the SpringHill Suites and they would make exceptions for pets.        We drove on to Medford in particularly heavy traffic, lots of Canadian campers and license plates as Canadians had been told to return home before the border was to be closed and a two week quarantine to be imposed for returning citizens.  Arriving at the hotel, we found it full, mostly Canadians all part of the mass exodus.  The hotel was similar to the TownePlace Suites just with a smaller ...
